What does Task mean in Project Management?

by | reviewed 2023-08-19
Task
A task is single action or unit of work required to complete a project. Tasks have a clear start and end and can be separated into sub-tasks.

Project Management purists argue that there is a difference between a 'Task' and an 'Activity'. In reality they are used interchangably and attempts to differentiate the terms never work for long. It is telling that 'Task' is not included in the PMI Lexicon of Project Management Terms instead they only provide a definition of 'Activity'.
